What we treat
-
Neck pain can result from poor posture, muscle tension, nerve compression, or sudden movement. Wry neck (acute torticollis) occurs when muscle spasms restrict movement, often causing sharp pain and difficulty turning the head. Through targeted massage and manual therapy, we work to release tension, improve mobility, and restore comfort.
-
Lower back pain is a common issue caused by muscle strain, joint dysfunction, postural imbalances, or prolonged sitting. Whether your pain is acute or chronic, remedial massage can help by reducing muscle tightness, improving circulation, and restoring functional movement.
-
Sciatica is characterized by radiating pain from the lower back down the leg, often caused by nerve compression, disc issues, or muscular tension. Massage therapy can help release tension in surrounding muscles, alleviate pressure on the sciatic nerve, and improve mobility, providing lasting relief.
-
Shoulder pain can arise from muscle tightness, joint stiffness, or repetitive strain. Whether due to an injury, poor posture, or daily activities, massage therapy helps by reducing inflammation, easing muscular restrictions, and restoring natural movement patterns.
-
Frozen shoulder is a condition marked by pain and progressive stiffness in the shoulder joint, limiting movement. Through gentle mobilization, massage, and stretching techniques, we aim to reduce stiffness, improve circulation, and restore function over time.
-
Plantar fasciitis causes heel pain and stiffness due to inflammation of the plantar fascia, while pes planus (flat feet) can contribute to postural imbalances and foot discomfort. Massage and manual therapy help by reducing tension, improving circulation, and supporting foot function.
-
Tendinopathy refers to irritation or degeneration of tendons, often caused by overuse, repetitive movements, or poor biomechanics. Massage therapy can aid in reducing inflammation, stimulating healing, and improving flexibility to support recovery.
-
Chronic pain conditions can be complex and often involve muscular, neural, and systemic imbalances. Our approach focuses on reducing tension, improving circulation, and enhancing movement patterns to help manage pain and improve quality of life.
-
Limited mobility can result from injury, muscle tightness, joint restrictions, or neurological conditions. Through targeted massage, stretching, and movement therapy, we help enhance flexibility, restore range of motion, and improve functional movement.
-
Poor posture can lead to chronic pain, muscular imbalances, and joint strain. Whether due to prolonged sitting, occupational habits, or muscle weakness, we use corrective massage and movement strategies to help restore alignment and prevent future discomfort.
-
Preventing injuries is key to maintaining an active, pain-free lifestyle. Regular massage helps reduce muscle tension, improve flexibility, and enhance circulation, keeping your body resilient and reducing the risk of strain or overuse injuries.
Massage Styles
-
Remedial massage is a targeted treatment designed for those experiencing musculoskeletal pain, postural imbalances, or injuries related to work, sport, or daily activities. This therapy involves a thorough assessment and hands-on treatment of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues to identify and address the root cause of discomfort.
Using a combination of massage techniques and rehabilitative exercises, remedial massage helps restore movement, alleviate pain, and improve overall function. Acute injuries may see improvement within two to four sessions, while chronic conditions may require ongoing treatment for optimal long-term health. Your remedial therapist will create a personalized treatment plan suited to your needs, lifestyle, and goals.
-
Deep tissue massage is a focused, therapeutic treatment aimed at releasing chronic muscle tension and adhesions (knots) within deeper layers of muscle and fascia. Using slow, sustained pressure and firm techniques, this massage helps improve circulation, reduce stiffness, and enhance mobility.
Ideal for individuals with persistent pain, high muscle tension, or a physically demanding lifestyle, deep tissue massage supports muscle recovery, postural alignment, and overall body balance. While some discomfort may occur during treatment, the result is a long-lasting release of tension and improved movement.
-
Sports massage is specifically designed to support athletes and active individuals in enhancing performance, preventing injuries, and aiding recovery. This treatment uses a combination of deep tissue techniques, stretching, and targeted muscle work to address the unique demands of training and competition.
Whether you’re preparing for an event, recovering from intense physical activity, or managing sports-related injuries, sports massage can help improve flexibility, reduce muscle fatigue, and promote faster recovery. This treatment is beneficial for both professional athletes and casual fitness enthusiasts looking to keep their bodies performing at their best.
-
Relaxation massage is a gentle, flowing therapy designed to calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and promote a deep sense of relaxation and well-being. Using long, rhythmic strokes and soothing pressure, this treatment encourages circulation, lymphatic flow, and mental clarity, helping to relieve both physical and emotional tension.
Perfect for those seeking stress relief, improved sleep, or general relaxation, this massage provides a restorative experience that nurtures both body and mind, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and rebalanced.
-
Pregnancy massage is a gentle and supportive treatment designed to ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote relaxation during the second trimester and beyond. Our approach is mindful, evidence-based, and tailored to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for both parent and baby.
We understand that certain acupressure points can influence labour and contractions. These points are traditionally used to encourage labour and are not applied during pregnancy massage treatments at Koa Health. Our therapists are trained to provide a soothing and therapeutic experience while avoiding these specific pressure points to ensure the safest care possible.
Pregnancy massage is not recommended in the first trimester, and we always advise consulting with your healthcare provider before booking—particularly if you have a high-risk pregnancy, a history of miscarriage, or any medical concerns.
Treatment Modalities
-
Range of motion (ROM) testing is a clinical assessment used to evaluate joint flexibility, movement limitations, and muscular imbalances. This helps identify areas of restriction, injury risks, and rehabilitation needs, allowing for a personalized treatment plan to restore optimal movement.
-
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) and Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) are advanced stretching methods that use gentle resistance and controlled movement to improve flexibility, strength, and range of motion. These techniques are particularly beneficial for athletes, individuals recovering from injuries, and those with muscular imbalances.
-
Trigger points, commonly known as "knots," are areas of tight, hyperirritable muscle fibers that can cause localized or referred pain. Trigger Point Therapy applies targeted pressure to these areas, helping to release tension, improve circulation, and reduce pain. This technique is highly effective for treating chronic pain, headaches, and muscular imbalances.
-
Myofascial release focuses on reducing tightness and restrictions in the fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds muscles and organs. Using gentle, sustained pressure, this technique helps to restore movement, reduce stiffness, and improve posture. It is particularly beneficial for those experiencing chronic pain, mobility issues, or postural dysfunctions.
-
Functional Release Cupping combines traditional myofascial cupping with movement-based techniques to enhance tissue mobility. Cups are applied to the skin, creating suction that lifts and separates soft tissue, improving circulation, reducing muscle tightness, and promoting recovery. This approach is highly effective for sports performance, chronic tension, and post-injury care.
-
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, reduce swelling, and support immune function. This treatment is especially helpful for those recovering from surgery, injury, or experiencing fluid retention and inflammation.
-
Clinical taping (including rigid and kinesiology taping) is used to support muscles and joints, reduce swelling, and improve movement patterns. This technique can be applied to assist in injury recovery, pain management, and postural correction, allowing the body to move more efficiently while healing.
